| We spent Thursday in the national park, Cinque Terre. Cinque Terre means "five lands" and they are connected by hiking trails and railways. The five villages are set atop cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Our hotel was in Riomaggiore. |

We drove to Manarola to check out the shops, then we took a train back to Riomaggiore for a boat ride.

We ate lunch in Montorosso. Pesto and anchovies are very popular in this part of Italy.
| Trofie with pesto. The kids all love this...except for Rose, who thinks it looks like worms. |

| Pizza! It was one of the best we've ever had. The kids devoured cheese pizza with salami. |
| Rosalie really wanted to wake this cat up but she settled for a photo. |
In the afternoon we hiked from Monterosso to Vernazza because our server at the hotel told us it was an easy hike for the kids. It was a 3 kilometer hike but it was anything but easy. Let's just say there were lots of tears and some cursing. The trails were very steep and extremely narrow in some points.
| The start of our hike...little did we know. |
| The start of many, many, many steps to Vernazza. |

| Rosie was still awake at this point. Shortly after, she fell asleep and I hiked her most of the way. |

| Thankfully someone had set up shop and was selling homemade, fresh squeezed lemonade and water. We were sweating and had already gone through all of our water. |
| Finally we reached Vernazza. There was lots of water and gelato all around! |
Cinque Terre was extremely beautiful. After our hike we went back to the hotel to freshen up and went back into to Manarola for dinner. We had an amazing lasagna bolognese but I was so frazzled I forgot the camera. Jay and I haven't discussed the hike yet...maybe by the time we get to Ireland.
Next stop - Pisa, San Gimignano, and Siena, Italy!
