Iseltwald, Switzerland

After Luzern, we drove another 45 minutes to our hotel in Iseltwald, Switzerland. Our room wasn't ready to check into so we walked across the street for a swim in the icy cold lake. The scenery is amazing. The water is a Caribbean blue and the mountains behind it make it look like a photo backdrop!

After swimming we checked into our room and I took a few photos from the balcony...not bad at all!

At this point, Jay and the kids were feeling refreshed from the swim. I was hoping we would lay down for a few hours to catch up on sleep but the kids were bouncing off the hotel room walls. Against better judgement we decided to head out to a popular tourist destination, Interlakken, which is about 15 minutes down the road. When we got there Natalie was having a meltdown from the heat and Mallory and Rosalie had already fallen asleep in the car. Mallory immediately woke up but Rosie was down for the count. Poor Jay carried her up and down the streets. Finally, we decided that if we were going to eat dinner she'd need to wake up. I tried everything. Jay's brilliant idea was to entice her with ice cream. She heard sugar and was up on her feet. We let them have gelato before dinner and all was right again, at least in Rosie's world. Interlakken was gorgeous but the hotels and shops were very high end so there wasn't a whole lot for us to do there.

After talking with a city guide, we decided to drive 10 minutes out of town to have an authentic Swiss food experience for dinner at Laturne. I had been hoping to try cheese fondue in Switzerland and they served it there!

Cognac cheese fondue...excellent!
Aged beef and cheeses and a Caprese appetizer
Immediately upon walking into the restaurant the girls and I decided that it felt just like Nana Rich's house for some reason. We felt right at home! Then we saw ALL of the ladybug decor. It was a heartwarming surprise!

No idea why the girls were so ecstatic about this bottle but it is funny. "Share a Coca-Cola light with ladies".

Mallory was too excited about this hand towel machine in the bathroom. Funny, we had blogged about the same thing at a county fair on our cross country trip. She used the bathroom three times and I think she really just wanted to keep washing her hands. It's the little things in life!

A relatively sane family would call it a night after our last 48 hours but they've never met Jay Maxwell, and hey, you're only visiting Switzerland for 24 hours once, right? Finally we drove to Lauterbrunnen where we hopped a short train ride up the mountains to the small village of Wengen. We saw some of the highest peaks of the Alps. Mount Jungfrou was spectacular.

Typically Wengen is a ski village but their shops and restaurants are open year round to cater to tourists. We spent about an hour perusing shops, grabbing an espresso, visiting a park and using the bathroom. Mallory said, "You brought us all the way up here to use the bathroom?!" Funny kid.

Tomorrow is another exciting adventure awaiting us. I'm still running on about two hours sleep combined in the last two days and we're driving three and a half hours to Lake Como, Italy. My only concern is I'll run out of adjectives that can barely describe the sites we're seeing!
