Radovljica & Bled, Slovenia

Yesterday we said arrivederci to Venice. We had an 8 am wake up call to board a van for a 2 1/2 hour ride to Ljubljana, Slovenia. When we realized the water taxi was going to take 45 minutes to get us from one end of Venice to the other, we booked it on foot. It was already pretty warm outside and we were racing to get to the van. We made it with minutes to spare.

After the van ride, we rented a car and drove to our Airbnb. The short ride from Ljubljana to Radovljica, where we are staying, was mostly easy until we made it into the village. We could not find the house! It's painted orange with a green roof so one would think it would stand out. We ended up meeting the owner of the Airbnb and she brought us less than 1/2 a mile to a long, hidden dirt road.

The house is in the middle of nowhere and is absolutely beautiful! The only noises I heard today were birds chirping and church bells ringing.

Slovenian wine is very popular and the host was gracious enough to leave us a bottle.

There's a sauna and a hot tub and the girls all decided that was their first order of business.

This rope swing is fun but has already caused more than a few screaming matches.

In the evening we drove to Lake Bled to have dinner in Bled Castle. We were running for shelter because a humongous storm was rolling in.

The castle is beautiful, if not a little eerie. From the base of the lake it sits perched on a cliff and looks like something out of a Transylvania storybook.

While I can appreciate the stunning views of the lake below from inside the castle, I have a major phobia of heights. The walk up the near vertical stone steps was nerve wracking!

The waiter brought us complimentary champagne. He said they call it "golden bubbles".

Sounds good to me!

Lake Bled is very close to the Austrian border and the food menu is much different than that of Ireland or Italy.

Sausage, horseradish and dumplings...sign me up!

This is Bled Island in the middle of Lake Bled. The church on the island is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and was built in the 17th century.

The picture windows gave us a perfect view of the thunder and lightning storm. Mallory is petrified of thunder and lightning (kryptonite #2) and was nervous all throughout dinner.

The storm wasn't due to end until after 11 pm but I think Mallory would have stayed inside the restaurant all night if we let her. The walk back down to the car was a nail biter!

Jay and I both agreed that it was probably the craziest lightning we've ever seen and it's still passing by our house as I write this blog post.

We don't have any set plans for tomorrow but we're all looking forward to a relaxing morning!
